Freak Bike Friday: Rat Rod Build Off

On May 1st the fifth annual Rat Rod Bikes Build Off began. Each year the members of the RatRodBikes.com forum pull out the grinders and rattle cans and try to best each other with low-budget rat rod-style bike builds. Each entrant starts a thread in the forum, and posts about the progress of their build. As of this posting, there are 72 build threads opened in the forum, and the pictures these builders are starting to post are pretty great.

The “rat rod” style grew out of American hot rod car culture, with an emphasis on found parts, patina, rust, a DIY ethos, and the cobbling together of old parts in new combinations. Gaskill, a very creative builder whose crazy bike builds we’ve featured here before, has posted a “before” picture of the bike he’ll be working on (below). You can follow his progress here.

And there’s a great gallery of all the completed bikes from last year’s build off. Good luck, builders!
