Came across this incredible image on Slate during bike to work week. Thought of it again while reading the comment stream on Josh’s provocative Publicola post.

My commute looks nothing like that. At all.

Unfortunately, China’s commutes no longer look this way, either, as car culture continues to increase dramatically throughout China. Great image, though, and it’s always neat to see large groups of folks using bikes for regular, everyday transport.

a flying pigeon dealer’s wet dream. and sad to know their rising middle class means the end of this once-common sight.

the masks are interesting too. i wonder if, despite the lack of cars, the air still sucked? or was that more like contemporary japan to spare others your cold? and it seems like all women with the masks – what’s that about?

reminds me of the setup to the old joke, “so, 900 million chinese walk into a bar…”

a sign of the times, many cities attempting to go this direction – and the ones that come from this direction go the opposite way.
