Robin Hood in the Garden

We came across this old rusty Robin Hood roadster. It’s not worth salvaging but we think it will be just dandy to grow our peas on this year, so last weekend we stuck it down the middle of a garden bed and planted peas down both sides of it. I’ll keep you posted. Maybe I’ll even make a podcast about how it turns out. Get it? A PODcast about our peas. I slay me.

December was a whirlwind. An unexpected trip to Vietnam came up, followed by Christmas, New Years, and suddenly it’s 2011! I’m just sorting through my photos from Vietnam and will be posting about the bicycles of Hanoi in the coming weeks. But this guy wins the prize for goofiest bike – I love the contrast between his expression and his cute Tweety Bird ride.

Dig those handle bars! Schwinn as photographed by Danny Lyon, an iconic American photographer better know for his 1960s and 70s black and white images of outlaw motorcyclists and prisoners.

Classic 1960s Schwinn Racer

This Schwinn Racer frame and 3-speed hub recently fell into my hands (thanks Meg!). It’s in far less than perfect condition, but the patina is part of what appeals to me, after all it’s older than I am!

There are lots of vintage Schwinn aficionados out there; on the Schwinn Forum I read:

Racer and Traveler models of that vintage were both offered in 1 speed (Bendix), 2 speed (Bendix Automatic) or 3 Speed (Sturmey Archer or Sachs built hubs); and they shared the same frame/drive components as the Co-ed and Breeze models of that era. While it kind of puts a damper on the uniqueness of these models, it is a real boon when looking for used replacement parts.

In fact the Schwinn Forum even has a thread called “Show Us Your Collegiate, Traveler, Racer, Tourist,” with lots of photos, including some of these old roadsters preserved or restored to pristine condition. I’m not that much of a bike fetishist, and I’m not even sure I’ll ever get this one on the road again, but I am enjoying admiring this rusty little piece of history.
